China, Vietnam, and Laos, the region’s three communist single-party states top the map, but the variation among the nations varies tremendously, as can be seen in the interactive below:
Imprisonment, however, is far from the only means of silencing the press. Detentions and arrests of journalist have become commonplace in Vietnam and Laos as scare tactics, compelling citizen journalists to operate under pseudonyms to maintain anonymity.
